Microsoft Outlook – How to search for emails in both the Primary Mailbox and the Exchange Online Archive

Applies To 

Accounts with email access.

Starting in May 2025, Exchange Online Archive mailbox will be gradually enabled in all accounts with email access.  No user action is required.

 

Solution

The following steps are performed in Outlook Desktop (classic) app.  The steps are similar in Outlook on the web and in 'New' Outlook app.

 

1. Click on the search text box.
      
   
   
2. Click the drop down menu next to the search text box, and select All Mailboxes.
      
   
   
3. The search result will combine the items from both the primary mailbox and Exchange Online Archive mailbox.
      
   
   
4. To search for items only in Exchange Online Archive mailbox, click on any folder under Exchange Online Archive, then repeat the above process – but select Current Mailbox instead.
